Description

Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) was a Greek philosopher and polymath, a student of Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great. Aristotle's writings were the first to create a comprehensive system of Western philosophy, encompassing morality, aesthetics, logic, science, politics, and metaphysics. Aristotle is said to have written 150 philosophical treatises. The 30 that survive touch on an enormous range of philosophical problems, from biology and physics to morals to aesthetics to politics. Aristotle refers to the Parts of Animals as an inquiry into the causes that in each case have determined the composition of animals. His theory opens with an introduction devoted to general considerations. This is followed by a discussion of the three degrees of composition, the first degree being composition of physical substances, the second degree, of homogeneous parts or tissues, and the third, of heterogeneous parts or organs.
